# Cycling trip to the North Cape from Flensburg - Part 1: Denmark and Southern Norway

My journey to the North Cape began in early August 2025\. It had been on my bucket list for a long time. After flying home from Istanbul because it was too hot for me, I felt the urge to get back on my bike. After 36 degrees Celsius in Turkey, I wanted something cooler. But before it got too cold at the North Cape, I decided to skip crossing Germany and took the train from Munich to Flensburg.

## Denmark

Flensburg was full of cyclists, but I quickly left them behind. I spent the first night at a campsite since the train left Munich at 5:45 a.m.

On day two, I met Tim, a cyclist who was heading to Iceland. We cycled together for four days until we reached Hirtshals in northern Denmark, spending all four nights in shelters. These are public shelters, often equipped with firewood and free of charge.

We cycled through Denmark in a fairly straight line, as it was essentially just a country we were passing through. We crossed the EuroVelo 3 route in Denmark several times. The days were mostly flat, with minimal elevation gain, and we always cycled on beautiful bike paths or very quiet roads.

My tire simply peeled off at the end of day 3, leading to a rapid puncture. Thankfully, the nearest bike shop wasn't far away, and I was able to buy a new tire. Apart from a brief shower on the morning of day 3 and a headwind on the straight road from Aarborg to Hirtshals on day 5, nothing else out of the ordinary happened.

## Southern Norway

In Hirtshals on day 6, my paths diverged with Tim, but I met another cyclist on the ferry to Larvik. I cycled with Robert for another three days to Oslo and explored the city with him. Robert was an early riser and used his long lunch break to go fishing, and in the evening we met up again at a fish shelter for fresh fish.

After Oslo, I continued alone on the EuroVelo 3, but one of the highlights of my trip awaited me: Rondane National Park. A high plateau, already above the tree line, with beautiful mountains, some still capped with snow. The climb was somewhat strenuous (900 meters of elevation gain over 11 kilometers), but the ascent from the comparable pre-Alpine landscape to a treeless, mountainous plateau with fabulous views was definitely worth it. Up there, I experienced my coldest night at around 3°C, but in good company with hikers walking the pilgrimage route from Oslo to Trondheim.

Unfortunately, it was already the off-season and the grocery stores were closed on Sundays; otherwise, I certainly would have gone hiking there. But without food, I continued back down into the valley to restock my supplies. At the supermarket, I met Anne from Trondheim, with whom I later went for pizza. Before reaching Trondheim, I took a rest day to wait out some rain and finally took a shower, as I'd been wild camping since Oslo. I also bought a new rain jacket because I no longer trusted my old one.
