Spring is here and cycling is wonderful again. I had to wait a little longer for the nights to be above freezing, but last weekend it finally happened. Four days, 2100 meters of elevation gain and 290 km on the artful loop of the Upper Bavarian Water Cycle Routes.

The route traveled, including photos, can be found under ["Maps"](https://www.sebastianwieser.de/karte/?ref=blog.sebcycles.com) and here: [https://route.cycling-basti.de/lists?list=160sexw44upf1m4](https://route.sebastianwieser.de/lists?list=160sexw44upf1m4&ref=blog.sebcycles.com) . ### Why test tour 2?

For me, the question after the successful [test tour to Rosenheim in the fall](https://blog.sebcycles.com/ausrustungstesttour-rosenheim/) was: Can I manage on my own for several days? I also acquired a few new pieces of equipment: a Coros Dura (bike navigation device), a windbreaker, and a thicker sleeping mat.

### Day 1: Lengriss - 81 km

The first day essentially followed the same route as my tour across the Alps two years ago, leading to Lake Tegernsee. Old memories resurfaced, but the weather was nicer and warmer than back then.

From Gut Kaltenbrunn, I followed the water cycle path, but then switched to the Lake Constance-Königssee cycle path, which involves quite a few climbs. The same was true from Tegernsee to Bad Tölz, with gradients of up to 12%. That was the first time I had to push my bike 😮‍💨.

There was a lovely Easter market in Bad Tölz that day. Afterwards, I followed the Isar River to the campsite in Lenggries. There I met another cyclist who was on his way to Venice.

### Day 2: Bad Kohlgrub - 97 km

At 5 degrees Celsius at night, the new sleeping mat immediately proved its worth, as my back no longer got cold. Under cloudy skies, I set off back towards the Isar River, which I only followed briefly before leaving it again in the direction of Jachenau and Lake Walchensee.

At Lake Walchensee, I enjoyed my first break on the mirror-like water. Unfortunately, it started to drizzle lightly. This continued all the way up to Wallgau. To escape the cloud, I went for lunch at a restaurant. Afterwards, the weather was dry and became almost sunny after the long descent to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. I quickly passed through Garmisch and continued along the Loisach River to Eschenlohe on a wonderful cycle path.

Shortly after Eschenlohe, I spotted an interesting lake on Google Maps satellite view. I had to see it for myself. Once there, I met some fishermen or hunters who told me more about it. It's a former open-cast mine that was closed down in 2010 due to nature conservation concerns. As a result, the lake has very steep sides and is up to 80 meters deep.

After that amazing lake, I was back on my favorite Lake Constance-Königssee bike path, which took me up 200 meters and 6 km with gradients of up to 14%. I had chosen the only campsite for the end of the day, but it was even higher up, so this was the next time I had to push my bike. Once I reached the top, I was able to enjoy a beautiful sunset, but then I quickly fell into bed.

### Day 3: Utting am Ammersee - 86 km

The night at one of Germany's highest campsites (950 m) was quite good. At seven o'clock the construction workers were at work next door, so we got an early start.

Leaving my "favorite bike path" behind, I headed towards Lech with many short climbs. One stop along the way: Wieskirch. There I met up again with the campers from the previous night and a few sweaty cyclists on the Lake Constance-Königssee bike path.

Shortly after my lunch break, the road climbed steeply up to Schongau 😒. The route continued hilly, offering beautiful views. Towards Reichling, I left the waterwheel path, crossed the Lech River towards Ammersee, and had to push my bike uphill again.

Once I reached the top, the ride to Utting was quite relaxed. Even though there weren't any major climbs like the day before, today's ride had the same amount of elevation gain as day two. To celebrate, I treated myself to a burger right by the lake and went to bed early.

### Day 4: Fürstenfeldbruck - 26 km

The weather was beautiful, and after breakfast I headed north along the Ammersee. I quickly realized, however, that my legs were giving out after the elevation gain of the previous days. Even though it was lovely along the lake and the Amper river, I only went as far as Fürstenfeldbruck train station and from there took the train home.

## Conclusion & Outlook

Even though I'm only writing this blog post now that I'm already on the road again, it was a great trip. Everything I wanted to test worked perfectly, so I was almost ready to go.

I still had to pick up my new bike. So I'm already in Greece, enjoying my trip southeast. More about this will be available in upcoming blog posts and here: [Current Trip](https://blog.sebcycles.com/aktuelle-reise/) .
